In a powerful speech commemorating International Women's Day in Paris, Dorien Rookmaker, a Member of the European Parliament from the Netherlands, voiced unwavering support for the Iranian Resistance and its President-elect, Maryam Rajavi.

This event spotlighted the critical role of women in combating oppression and striving for freedom, especially within the challenging context of Iran’s political landscape.

Rookmaker praised Rajavi’s leadership and the resilience of Iranian women, declaring, “the liberation of Iranian women will lead to the liberation of women everywhere.” This statement underscores the interconnectedness of women’s struggles across the globe and highlights the importance of international solidarity in the fight for human rights and gender equality.

The MEP also paid tribute to the heroines of the Iranian Resistance who endure imprisonment and torture, quoting Maryam Akbari Monfared’s hopeful assertion that “the spring of freedom is on the way.” Such references not only honor the courage of these women but also signal a broader message of hope and resilience.

Rookmaker’s speech, rich with personal reflections and a genuine sense of solidarity, likened Maryam Rajavi to Nelson Mandela, applauding her innovative approach to opposition and her exceptional organizational skills. “Maryam Rajavi has created a new way of doing opposition… And I know how difficult it is to build an organization. And the way that you do it, the way you do leadership, after we freed Iran, I want you to teach us how you do this,” Rookmaker stated, acknowledging the challenges of leadership and organization.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation in Iran, the Dutch MEP brought attention to the dire circumstances faced by political prisoners, emphasizing the regime’s brutality through the stories of women like Forough Taghipour and Maryam Akbari Monfared. Monfared, in particular, symbolizes the unyielding spirit of the Iranian Resistance, fighting for justice in the face of overwhelming adversity.

Rookmaker’s message was not just one of support but also a call to action, urging global solidarity with the Iranian Resistance. By celebrating the achievements of women like Rajavi and recognizing the sacrifices of countless others, the speech emphasized the importance of collective effort in the struggle for freedom and equality.

This narrative of empowerment, resistance, and hope serves as a reminder of the enduring power of solidarity. As Rookmaker poignantly concluded, the growing consensus among European Parliament members against appeasing Iran’s regime marks a significant step toward supporting the Iranian opposition and, ultimately, achieving freedom and rights for all Iranians.
