MEPs voice their support for the Iranian Resistance

Several prominent Members of the European Parliament have spoken out against the Iranian regime and the horrifying abuses the Iranian people are suffering on a daily basis.

Mr. Milan Zver, an MEP from Slovenia, has called on European governments to support Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the Iranian Resistance. The Resistance, he says, is the best alternative to the mullahs’ regime.

As someone who has followed the situation in Iran for a long time, Mr. Zver said that he believes the Iranian people with remain without freedom for as long as the mullahs are in control. He states that it is clear that President Hassan Rouhani is not the “moderate” he claims to be as more than 2,300 people have been executed since he took office.

He said: “This regime is not just the enemy of its own people, but has been active in sponsoring terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism to other countries, and is fully supporting Bashar al-Assad in Syria.”

Mr. Zver spoke warmly about Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), saying that he and many colleagues in the European Parliament have had the honour of listening to her recent speeches. He reiterated that her views are shared by himself and many colleagues, and said that he urges all European governments to support this “best alternative” to the Iranian regime in working towards a free Iran.

Julie Girling, an MEP from the United Kingdom, also voiced her support for Mrs. Rajavi and the Iranian opposition. She emphasised that freedom and democracy in Iran through fighting for human rights is something that means a lot to her. Ms. Girling said that she is distressed by the images of hangings, executions and arrests taking place in Iran and is happy to be involved in supporting the people of Iran. She said that the people of Iran are being denied freedom – something that everyone should have.

She also praised Mrs. Rajavi for her leadership of the opposition. She said: “(…) it’s marvellous that a woman of her calibre and her quality is heading up the Iranian Resistance. It’s terribly important; women are always a force for change. Women are the real cornerstone of society, and it’s very important that we support her and make sure that this message gets across. So, congratulations to her and everyone who works with her. I wish them every success in the future, and I will be supporting them.”
