On July 28 and 29, 2009, Iraqi security forces attacked Camp Ashraf at the behest of the Iranian regime. The attackers used armored vehicles, batons, and firearms to injure hundreds of Ashraf residents and kill 13 PMOI members. Another 36 residents were taken hostage by security forces. Unarmed and defenseless, PMOI members in Ashraf set an example of resistance and resilience under pressure.

To honor the martyrs of this event, PMOI Resistance Units across Iran conducted various activities, distributing leaflets and displaying images and quotes about the martyrs to commemorate their sacrifice. These activities spanned numerous cities across Iran, from the capital Tehran to Sabzevar in the east, from Karaj to Isfahan, from Qazvin to Shahrud, from Shiraz in the south to Mashhad, and further north to Ramsar and Damavand.

The widespread nature of these activities signifies that the message of the sacrifices of these martyrs, which symbolizes steadfast resistance until the end, has resonated throughout Iran. The distributed leaflets carried slogans reflecting the determination and memory of the martyrs.

In Karaj, images of Iranian Resistance leader Massoud Rajavi were displayed, along with his message: “The response to the regime of massacre is fire.” In Tehran, the leaflets featured Maryam Rajavi with the quote: “The martyrs of July 28 and 29 are heroes who created an epic with their bare hands.” The same message from Maryam Rajavi was echoed in Isfahan: “The martyrs of July 28 and 29 are heroes who created an epic with their bare hands.”

In Sabzevar, the slogan read: “We stand firm to the end with a hundredfold resolve.” In Qazvin, the leaflets commemorated the martyrs with: “In memory of the martyrs of July 28 and 29.” In Shiraz, the message was: “We swear by the blood of our comrades, we stand until the end.” In Mashhad, the defiant slogan declared: “We neither forgive nor forget.”One PMOI member said, “The widespread activities across Iran demonstrate that the blood of our martyrs has not been shed in vain. Their legacy of resistance lives on in every corner of our nation.”

Another member remarked, “The attack on Ashraf was a brutal attempt to quash our movement, but instead, it strengthened our resolve. The martyrs’ sacrifice is a beacon of hope and courage for all of us.”The resistance units’ efforts to commemorate the martyrs and spread their message are a testament to the enduring spirit of resistance among the Iranian opposition.

They are carrying out these activities despite a wave of repressive measures by the regime to prevent any kind of support for the PMOI. This is a reminder that the struggle for freedom and justice continues, inspired by the sacrifice of those who gave their lives in the pursuit of these ideals. The legacy of the Ashraf martyrs lives on, fueling the determination of those who remain steadfast in their commitment to a free and democratic Iran.
