On October 6 and 7, retirees from various sectors in Iran staged protests across the country, demanding better pensions and necessities.

Steel industry retirees and Social Security Organization pensioners gathered in Tehran and several provinces, including Gilan, Isfahan, and Khuzestan, to express their frustration. The demonstrators, many of whom have been protesting for years, voiced their anger over the government’s failure to address their economic hardships.

In Tehran, a large rally formed outside the presidential office, joined by retirees from across the country. Despite the peaceful nature of the protest, government forces violently dispersed the crowd, arresting several retirees.

Demonstrators chanted slogans such as “Inflation and high prices are killing the people” and “Only on the streets can we claim our rights,” highlighting their dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the economy. Protesters also condemned the widespread injustice and corruption that has plagued the country for years.

Iranian law mandates the adjustment of retirees’ pensions in line with inflation and living costs, but this law passed in 2010, has been largely ignored.

Protesters have repeatedly called for its implementation to ensure their financial stability, but the regime has consistently failed to respond to their demands. The growing economic protests reflect a deepening crisis, as the purchasing power of many Iranian households continues to shrink.

On Monday, October 7, Telecommunications Company retirees also took to the streets, demanding the government enforce the pension adjustment law. Protests occurred in multiple cities, including Tehran, Shiraz, and Tabriz, as retirees voiced their frustrations over more than a decade of neglect.

As economic conditions worsen in Iran, protests by professional groups such as retirees, industrial workers, and healthcare workers are becoming more frequent. The regime’s focus on military and regional ambitions, including the development of weapons of mass destruction, has left many citizens struggling to meet their basic needs, fueling ongoing unrest across the nation.
