In a surprising disclosure on September 28, Saeed Ghasemi, a former commander of the Revolutionary Guards, during an interview with Ofogh state TV, revealed the pervasive influence and reach of the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK) within the Iranian government.

He stated, “The [PMOI] phenomenon alone, meaning Masoud and Maryam [Rajavi] and their group, are a significant threat to the regime… They are now deeply embedded in all ministries and are actively pursuing their missions.”

This candid admission from a senior Revolutionary Guards figure, who has been familiar with the PMOI since the aftermath of the 1979 revolution, underscores the organization’s potential to upend the regime from within. Such an assertion, coming from an insider, amplifies the regime’s deep-seated fears concerning the PMOI’s power to dethrone the mullahs’ rule.

Ghasemi’s remarks further debunked the regime’s long-standing narrative that the PMOI depended on Saddam Hussein’s Iraq for support. This suggests that the regime’s relentless accusations regarding PMOI’s association with the former Iraqi government were largely baseless. The essence of Ghasemi’s confession is the realization among the top brass of the IRGC that such allegations, often parroted by their foreign allies, are largely unsubstantiated.

Ghasemi emphasized that the PMOI’s threat is not a relic of the past. Instead, they are deeply intertwined in the current bureaucratic structure of Iran, carrying out their agendas even now.

A closer examination of Ghasemi’s statements points towards an even more profound understanding: the PMOI did not require the Iraq war as a catalyst to challenge the regime. Instead, it was the founder of the regime, Ruhollah Khomeini, who saw the war as a necessary distraction, describing it as a “divine blessing”, to divert attention from the PMOI’s growing influence.

Ali Khamenei, the current Supreme Leader, similarly acknowledges the potent threat the PMOI poses to the regime.

He perceives the PMOI as an independent entity with the potential to overthrow his rule. Hence, he has directed massive state machinery, ranging from the Ministry of Intelligence to foreign embassies, in a relentless campaign against the PMOI, both domestically and internationally.

During the nation-wide uprisings in 2017, 2019, and 2022, Khamenei repeatedly insinuated foreign powers’ involvement, attempting to discredit the protests. However, as Ghasemi’s revelations suggest, the regime’s top echelons recognize the PMOI’s innate capability, independent of any foreign influence, to challenge and potentially topple the regime.
