Surge in executions in Iran under president Raisi’s regime

On the eve of World and Europe Day Against the Death Penalty, a fervent appeal has been made to the international community to intervene in this worsening human rights situation.

For years, Iran has not only been infamous for the highest number of women’s executions but also the highest per capita execution rate worldwide. The foundation of the clerical regime seems to be built on the death penalty.

A glance at the numbers showcases the grim reality. In the two-year span from August 2021 to August 2023 under Raisi, a staggering 1,275 people were executed. This is an alarming increase from 333 executions reported in the entire year of 2021. Raisi, notorious for his involvement in the 1988 massacre, has overseen this surge in capital punishments.

The execution used as a weapon of suppression, this gruesome method of punishment is aimed at silencing a public that is overwhelmingly impoverished, jobless, and denied basic freedoms.

What’s even more shocking is that these figures don’t even account for politically-motivated executions from the 1980s. Since 1981, the regime has ended the lives of 120,000 individuals simply because they opposed the government. This includes the horrifying fact that at least 50 pregnant women were executed in the 1980s, in complete defiance of international law.

While the period between August 2013 and August 2021, under Hassan Rouhani, witnessed the execution of 118 women, which averages out to 15 women annually, the two years under Raisi have seen 42 female executions, an average of 21 women per year. This is a marked increase from the previous regime.

The 1988 massacre alone saw the execution of 30,000 political prisoners, including a large number of women.

The NCRI Women’s Committee, devoted to shedding light on women’s rights violations in Iran, commemorates October 10 each year, underscoring that Iran remains the top executioner of women globally. The regime discriminately targets religious and ethnic minorities, political dissidents, and most notably, women.

The Iranian Resistance has consistently called for the abolition of the death penalty and a termination of all human rights abuses in the country. Today, on the World Day Against the Death Penalty, the spotlight is on Iranian women who face this grim fate.

Contrary to international law recommendations, which emphasize alternative punishments for women considering their caregiving roles, Iran continues its heinous practice of not only imprisoning but also executing them.

There’s a united call for the international community to pressurize the Iranian regime to halt the death penalty, particularly against women, and seek justice against officials like Ebrahim Raisi and Ali Khamenei for orchestrating this reign of terror.
