The harsh realities of the past year underscore the magnitude of the economic challenges confronting the nation. At the onset of the previous Persian calendar year (March 2023), the Mardom Salari newspaper reported that the poverty line was set at 150 million rials.

However, by the year’s end, the ILNA news agency quoted a government official who asserted that the actual cost of living, considering essential needs such as housing and education, far exceeded 300 million rials.

In early last year, the Shargh newspaper revealed that the misery index had surpassed 40%, with the inflation rate soaring beyond 50%. By year-end, Iran’s misery index had climbed to 19th among 157 countries.

Reports from regime-affiliated sources indicate that approximately 60 million people from six low social groups have fallen below the poverty line, with 30 million unable to afford even basic necessities like bread.

Poverty has intensified across all segments of the Iranian population, except for a privileged few associated with the ruling regime.

The macroeconomic data available points to clear reasons behind this widespread poverty. According to Abdolnasser Hemmati, the former head of the Central Bank of Iran, during the administration of Ebrahim Raisi, money printing increased by 83%, liquidity by 72%, the exchange rate of the US dollar by 97%, gold coins by 162%, and the price index by 114%.

The consequences of these economic policies are evident in the daily lives of ordinary Iranians, with the cost of essential goods skyrocketing and the purchasing power of citizens severely diminished.

From its inception, the regime has focused on exploitation and oppression, as evidenced by its dismissive attitude towards the economy. The grandson of the regime’s founder, Hassan Khomeini, acknowledged the malicious nature of policies that perpetuate poverty and destitution.

The roots of Iran's economic woes can be traced back to the regime's oppressive policies.

Despite the challenges, there is hope for change. Iran’s rebellious youth and Resistance Units are working tirelessly towards a democratic revolution that aims to uproot the oppressive regime and pave the way for a brighter future.
