“Another miscalculation, in my judgment, was trading five Iranian spies and giving Iran access to six billion dollars for the exchange of five innocent Americans,” Chairman McCaul stated.

“Another miscalculation, in my judgment, was trading five Iranian spies and giving Iran access to six billion dollars for the exchange of five innocent Americans,” Chairman McCaul stated.

“This is just encouraging more ransom hostage-taking. After we gave Iran access to the six billion, we saw Hamas take 241 hostages from Israel, including many Americans, and we know that many of them have not survived in the tunnels in Gaza.”

He argued that this move only encourages more “ransom hostage-taking” by foreign governments. McCaul emphasized the need to project American power and punish bad behavior, rather than rewarding it. “We must hold them accountable for their human rights abuses and negotiate from a position of strength, not weakness,” he stated.

The chairman of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee also acknowledged the pain felt by families with loved ones illegally detained overseas, saying “I can’t think of anything more painful than to have my loved one abducted and held hostage in a foreign land.”He pledged to continue prioritizing the issue of wrongfully detained Americans.

The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) has repeatedly exposed the Iranian regime’s use of hostage diplomacy as a tool of extortion and intimidation. The council has called for a firm approach from the EU and the US towards the Iranian regime, the leading state sponsor of terrorism, in response to its “inhumane and depraved hostage diplomacy.”

The NCRI has urged concrete action to hold the Iranian regime accountable for its human rights abuses and support for terrorism, rather than rewarding its bad behavior through prisoner exchanges and sanctions relief.
