On October 11, in commemoration of the World Day Against Death Penalty, the Welsh Parliament held a significant conference spotlighting Iran’s human rights situation.

The event saw the participation of parliamentarians and representatives from the Iranian diaspora in the UK. The core objective: to bolster backing for the intensifying uprising in Iran and advocate for the inception of a democratic republic.

The conference was helmed by Mark Isherwood, a Conservative Party stalwart and the Shadow Minister for Social Justice. Key discussions were led by influential speakers such as Altaf Hussain and Sam Rowlands, both members of the Conservative Party, William Powell, an ex-member of the Welsh Parliament, and Joseph Carter of the Liberal Democrats representing the City Council.

A standout feature of the gathering was the poignant speeches rendered by members of various Iranian communities in the UK. They offered a first-hand account, magnifying the dire need for democratic change in Iran.

The overarching theme of the event was to rally global awareness towards the prolific execution practices of the present Iranian regime. The assembly stood united in their solidarity with the Iranian people’s yearning for democratic amendments. This conference underscored the urgency for international collaboration and unwavering support towards the Iranian populace in their quest for foundational rights and a democratic horizon.

Mr. Isherwood, on behalf of the Conservative Party, articulated the broad-based endorsement from the Welsh Parliament in favor of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and its leader’s Ten-Point Plan. He particularly highlighted the monumental 1988 massacre, wherein 30,000 political detainees met with a tragic end in Iran.

“It is imperative we ensure this heinous act is not forgotten, either in essence or in memory,” said Isherwood. He also expressed gratitude to the Welsh Senators for their steadfast support to the Anglo-Iranian community.

Echoing the sentiment, Mr. Rowlands vocalized his perspective on the requisite transformation in Iran, reaffirming the dedication of his peers in supporting the NCRI Ten-Point Plan. He spoke of collaboration at the highest echelons of the UK government to extend necessary support for the Anglo-Iranian populace.

Shining light on the conference’s historical relevance, Mr. Powell acknowledged his recent association with the NCRI. He emphasized the global aftershocks of the Mullahs’ regime and the Welsh Senate’s unanimous pledge to sustain the pressure on the current regime.

Speaking from the Liberal Democrats corner, Mr. Carter lauded the conference’s essence, drawing parallels with how Western democracies often overlook their freedoms. He hailed the dauntless spirit of Iranian women advocating change despite the grim reprisals.Members of the Anglo-Iranian community further elevated the event’s significance by sharing their perspectives, echoing a unanimous call for a free and democratic Iran.
