At a significant gathering in Paris on February 24, to mark World Women’s Day, Dominique Attias, Chair of the Board of Directors at the European Lawyers Foundation, delivered a poignant speech that cast a stark light on the ongoing struggles faced by female political prisoners in Iran.

The conference, aimed at honoring the courage and resilience of women worldwide, also served as a platform to criticize the international community’s response to the Iranian regime’s treatment of women affiliated with the Iranian Resistance.

Attias expressed her dismay over the United Nations’ perceived inaction, accusing it of enabling the Iranian regime by failing to hold it accountable for its actions against women. “The United Nations, by embracing Iranian state officials, legitimizes a regime that subjects female political prisoners to severe mistreatment,” she stated, highlighting the stark reality faced by many women in Iran.

The leadership roles of women within the Iranian Resistance were particularly praised by Mrs. Attias. She commended the male members of the Resistance for their forward-thinking approach in selecting a female leader, demonstrating a commitment to gender equality and empowering women to take on significant responsibilities.

Moreover, Attias shed light on Tehran’s alleged attempts to discredit the Iranian Resistance. She emphasized the need for vigilance and awareness in European countries and institutions to counter these sinister agendas. “We must remain alert to Tehran’s attempts to undermine the legitimacy of the Iranian Resistance,” she urged, calling for international solidarity.

The speech detailed the harrowing experiences of women like Maryam Akbari Monfared, who has been imprisoned for over a decade due to her pursuit of justice for her relatives, victims of the regime’s brutal crackdowns. Attias also mentioned Azam Gholami-Zahab, who faces a lengthy prison sentence for her association with the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK).

Attias’s powerful words resonated with the audience, serving as a reminder of the Iranian women’s indomitable spirit. “Their cries of ‘Women, life, freedom!’ echo beyond the walls of their prisons, a testament to their unyielding resolve,” she stated.

Criticism was also directed at the current Iranian president, Ebrahim Raisi, whom Attias identified as one of the executioners during the 1988 massacre. She condemned the international community for engaging with Raisi, underscoring the contradiction between the values championed by these institutions and the actions they tolerate from the Iranian regime.

The speech concluded with a call to action, urging global support for Iranian women fighting for justice and freedom. “Let us support them in their struggle,” Attias implored, “Their fight is not just for the people of Iran but for the dignity of women everywhere.”

Through her address, Dominique Attias not only honored the resilience of Iranian women but also challenged the global community to take a stand against oppression and support those who fight for freedom and equality. Her words are a clarion call for solidarity and action, reminding us of the power of collective support in the face of adversity.
