MEK Iran Founding

MEK Iran (follow them on Twitter and Facebook) was founded on September 6, 1965 by three engineers, Mohammad Hanifnejad, Said Mohsen, and Ali-Ashgar Badizadgan, former members of the Freedom Movement. This movement is also known as the Liberation Movement and was created by Medhi Bazargan in May 1961.

After the Liberation Movement was banned, Mohammad Hanifnejad, Said Mohsen, and Ali-Ashgar Badizadgan come together with the unique purpose, to develop a new plan to bring democracy and freedom to Iran.

The three young engineers thought that the use of the Liberation Movement strategies would lead only to the same disastrous end. So, they decided to create a new strategy.

A discussion group with trusted friends of the three engineers, who were mostly professionals living in Tehran, was formed. The members of this group came together twice a week, to discuss religion, history, philosophy, and revolutionary theory.

MEK Iran

MEK Iran’s early meetings culminated in their interpretation of a true Islam as an inherently tolerant and democratic faith, which is fully compatible with the values of modern-day society.

The MEK Iran dedicated six years to formulate its progressive view of Islam and to develop a strategy to replace Iran’s dictatorial monarchy with a democratic government.

The MEK rejects the belief of the Iran’s fundamentalist mullahs, that the interpretation of Islam is their exclusive domain, along with with the clerics’ reactionary vision of Islam.

The MEK Iran has a comprehensive interpretation of Islam. This interpretation proved to be more persuasive, appealing, and successful than any attempt in the past.

Massoud Rajavi,  assumed leadership of the opposition organization after the execution of MEK’s founders in 1972 by the Shah regime. Massoud was a prominent political prisoner during the pre–1979 revolution. Massoud Rajavi continued to lead the MEK Iran from inside the prison, until his release in 1979. He helped to organize the movement that aimed at toppling the Shah regime and bringing freedom to Iran.
