Stop Fundamentalism – ISNA, an Iranian state-run news agency reported on June 8 that the Supreme Commander of Iranâ€™s elite Islamic Revolutionary commented on Wednesday that the Islamic Republic sought to become â€œthe top power in the region within the next two decades.â€
â€œThe country is facing an extraordinarily critical and difficult set of circumstances and needs greater security and defense than it did beforeâ€, Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi said to the media.
Safavi said that the Revolutionary Guards were actively working to transform the Islamic Republic into the â€œnumber one power in the regionâ€ within the next 20 years.
He added that the Middle Eastâ€™s vast oil supplies brought with it economic and political strength.
â€œAs a military commander I believe that the worldâ€™s energy security is dependent on the Middle East and Iranâ€, he said.
