Unmasking Iran’s Global Influence: Domestic Suppression and International Terror

In recent times, the Iranian regime has significantly extended its influence far beyond national borders, marking its presence in various international crises and conflicts.

Notably, the use of Iranian drones in Ukraine resulting in civilian casualties and the regime’s backing of terror proxies in the Middle East have underlined Tehran’s growing geopolitical footprint. These actions seem twofold in their objectives: they distract from Iran’s internal challenges and simultaneously promote a fundamentalist and terror-centric agenda on the global stage.

Simultaneously, Iran has intensified its crackdown on internal dissent. Over the past two months, there has been a notable increase in state-sanctioned executions, particularly targeting individuals involved in the previous year’s protests. This surge in suppressive measures, alongside draconian laws targeting women and youth, exposes the regime’s authoritarian bent. Rather than showcasing strength, these actions reveal a desperate attempt to quash the brewing uprising, a response to decades of socio-political oppression, economic inequality, and ethnic discrimination.

Amidst this internal chaos, the Iranian regime has embarked on a sinister misinformation campaign, primarily targeting the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK). The regime perceives these entities as significant threats – a viable alternative to its malign rule. This assault on the opposition includes a recent sham trial of 104 members of the Resistance, indicating Tehran’s readiness to politically and militarily target its adversaries.

Furthermore, the regime’s orchestrated terrorist attacks on the Resistance’s offices in Paris and Berlin, and the assassination attempt against Prof. Alejo Vidal Quadras, former Vice President of the European Parliament, highlight its relentless effort to suppress dissent. These actions portray a regime unyielding in its approach to stifling any opposition, both at home and abroad.

Regionally, Tehran grapples with navigating its multiple, sometimes conflicting interests. It strives to project itself as a formidable force against the West and a major player in Middle Eastern geopolitics. However, this posture is counterbalanced by the regime’s underlying fears of substantial challenges on the ground, leading its proxies to jeopardize international waters and regional stability.

As Iran continues its dual strategy of internal repression and global terrorism, it becomes increasingly clear that the international community’s efforts to transform Tehran into a benign actor have failed. The response to this situation must be multi-faceted. Firstly, activating the snapback mechanism of the United Nations Resolution 2231 and reinstating the six UN resolutions would address the regime’s nuclear deviations.

Secondly, shutting down Iranian embassies worldwide would be a recognition of the threats posed, as indicated by various intelligence agencies.

Most importantly, supporting the Iranian people’s aspiration for freedom and democracy is imperative. This approach sends a firm message to the regime that the world has had enough of its terror and oppression. It is time for the global community to exploit the regime’s vulnerabilities and stand united with those who seek a transformative shift from the status quo.
