During the presidential election campaign, Donald Trump made no secret of his disproval of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. He vowed that if he became president, he would scrap it and described it as the “worst” deal.
And since becoming president, he has spoken out about Iran on numerous occasions. He has denounced it for its ballistic missile program and its belligerence across the Middle East. He has imposed sanctions and he has voiced his support for the people of Iran against the “corrupt” regime ruling their country.
However, despite the harsh rhetoric, Iran is still continuing with its bloody rampage across the region. It still provides extensive support to its numerous militias and proxy groups, including the Lebanese Hezbollah. It is still able to transport weapons and military personnel to other nations in the region. It still threatens the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and other US allies. It is still a threat to US interests across the Middle East.
It has been proven that appeasement does not work with the clerical regime in Iran. The previous administration gave Iran a load of concessions during the nuclear agreement negotiations and Obama turned a blind eye to many threats from Iran. It was given huge sums of money and countless assets were released as a result of the lifting of sanctions. However, nothing changed.
The people of Iran expected, and were hoping, to at last see some positive change when the nuclear deal took effect. Yet nothing changed.
There was no economic improvement. There was no social improvement. Billions of dollars got plundered abroad and the people continued to suffer in every way imaginable.
One of the biggest mistakes of the Obama administration was to leave out Iran’s ballistic missile program from the nuclear deal negotiations. It was also a huge missed opportunity for the human rights issues to finally be addressed.
Iran is the world’s worst offender when it comes to the execution rate per capita and the regime is notorious for arresting, torturing and killing political opponents.
Now is the time for President Trump to follow through with the harsh rhetoric. It is a chance to right the wrongs of the previous administration and ensure that the world is a safer place by eliminating the threat of Iran.
The country is going through a great period of unrest. At the end of last year, the people of Iran took to the streets to protest their economic situation but the protests quickly spread across more than a hundred cities across the country and they turned into anti-government demonstrations. The people called for death to Rouhani, death to the Supreme Leader, and most importantly for regime change.
The current unrest is a turning point for Iran. There is no way the regime can go back to the way it was before the protests.
The public anger is so widespread and the people are determined to bring peace, tranquillity and security back to their country. And this puts the regime under even more pressure. International pressure on top of this is sure to make the regime collapse.
