Iran Protests 2019 Analysis

By Navid Felker

The anti-regime protests began on November 15 and spread rapidly in 165 cities across the country. In a bloody suppression, the regime oppressive forces killed at least 251 protesters and arrested over 3700 people.

Opposite to regime claims and massive crackdown, protests are continuing in various places and parts of Iran.

Protesters have resisted the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) onslaught and pushed them back. The regime is terrified and even after eight days, it refuses to restore the internet.

However, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) managed in getting valuable and significant information and news about the protests.

Some are as follows:
– Protests occurred in 148 cities.
– At least 251 have been killed. The MEK has identified 85 victims. Most were shot in the head and the chest by snipers. Some as young as 13 are among them.
– List of names of 85 martyrs
– 3,700 have been wounded.
– 7,000 have been arrested. Fars News agency reported on the first day of the protests that 1,000 had been arrested.

Though the actual figures are much higher.

The regime mobilized all his suppressive force from the very first hour, including the IRGC, the paramilitary Bassij, the Intelligence Ministry and plainclothes agents.

The regime used tanks and armored personnel carriers in Shiraz, Mahshahr, and Kermanshah. In Shiraz, they opened fire to the crowd from helicopters.

IRGC and Bassij centers were attacked by the people. The regime officials and state-run media acknowledged and admitted that “The epicenter of the attacks demonstrated the level of violence and targeted rebellion.”

Iran Protests 2019 Characteristics:

The regime failed to stop the spread of protests, despite its readiness for any potential reaction to a gasoline price hike.

This emphasized that:

– The balance of power between the people and the Iranian Resistance is shifting.
– While the uprising was prompted by the gasoline price hike, it quickly morphed into a nationwide and popular uprising.
– The slogans were from the very beginning political and directed at rejecting the entirety of the regime. The most prevalent slogans were “death to the dictator,” “Death to Rouhani,” “Death to Khamenei,” “leave Syria alone, think of us,” “neither Gaza, no Lebanon, my life only for Iran.” The slogans reflected what the MEK had been saying for many, many years.
– The speed with which the uprising spread was unprecedented. People’s anger was entirely directed at government agencies and institutions, particularly agencies affiliated with the IRGC and Khamenei’s office. The IRGC-affiliated newspaper wrote that the uprising had been organized and that the “rioters had been trained.” Those involved in the uprising were tasked with “attacking sensitive military and law-enforcement centers,” it wrote.

The November 2019 Iran Protests had a dual characteristic. It was well-organized and all impoverished sectors were involved. The regime acknowledged the decisive role of the MEK’s Resistance Units in Iran Protests 2019.

Regime’s supreme leader defended on November 17 the decision to raise gas prices and ordered security forces to take matters in their own hand and blamed the MEK for being responsible for the protests.

On November 17, 2019, Ali Shamkhani, the secretary for the Supreme National Security Council, told the Majlis closed-door session that “a number of people who were provoking the people in the streets were identified. It was determined that they had links to the MEK.”

“Our assessments show that counterrevolutionary and the MEK are guiding the activities,” told regime state-run tv on November 17.

The head of the paramilitary force said that “unrest on Saturday evening was carried out by centers of chaos. The MEK has cells in our country.”

Ghiasi, Commander of the IRGC in Fars Province told IRNA news agency on November 19 that “Organizers of the protests in Fars Province were affiliated to the MEK.”

Current State – Futures prospection

The Iran Protests 2019 is a turning point and is the beginning of the end for the regime. Adding that the uprisings in Iraq and Lebanon were strategic blows to the regime.

The qualitative change depth and the expansion of MEK’s Resistance Units activities in the past two years and it has deeply influenced young people. The force seeking regime’s overthrow has established its links with the people and now the entire overthrow of the regime turned into the demand of the population.

Iranian Resistance Call on the international community

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, said,
1. World governments and the international community must set aside all considerations and reservations about the regime. They should demand an immediate halt to the killings and arrests. If the regime does not comply, they must readily pull the trigger of UN Security Council sanctions.
2. The UNSC must declare the regime’s leaders as criminals committing crimes against humanity. They must face justice for this massive suppression and bloodshed.
3. The international community must strongly condemn the mullahs’ terrorism on the internet and assist the people of Iran in circumventing this inhumane blockade.
4. The regime is using all its ploys to hide the actual number of the martyrs. The United Nations must send investigative missions on the martyrs, the wounded and the prisoners.
