In a speech at a conference, former Dutch Senator Prof. Kees De Lange highlighted the Iranian regime's manipulative tactics in the Middle East.

The event, which took place in The Hague, saw Prof. De Lange accusing Iran of using the Palestinian cause as a strategic distraction from its oppressive internal policies and external aggression.

Prof. De Lange stated, “For the Iranian regime, Palestine is just business and a perfect means of diverting attention from its own murderous misconduct and failures towards its own people.” This statement underscores the alleged dual nature of Iran’s involvement in regional conflicts. He suggests that the regime views these conflicts not as humanitarian or ideological battles but as tools for maintaining internal control.

The former senator delved into the regime’s fear of internal dissent, linking it to their involvement in foreign conflicts. He quoted Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s views, implying that Iran’s engagement in wars in Syria, Iraq, and Palestine is a strategic move to distract from potential uprisings at home. “The fear that a popular uprising setting power undermines the regime, its stability,” he emphasized, showing how domestic issues drive Iran’s foreign policy.

Referring to the alarming number of executions in Iran, which reached 743 since the beginning of 2023, De Lange condemned Iran’s role in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. He highlighted the National Council of Resistance of Iran’s claim that Tehran is the “head of the snake,” responsible for much of the region’s unrest.

The former senator also criticized the regime’s disregard for democracy and its pursuit of nuclear arms. He advocated for international action, including designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization and implementing maximum sanctions. “Remove every attempt at appeasement, which will only lead to more misery for more people during longer periods from all dealings with the Iranian regime,” he urged.

De Lange’s call to action extended to supporting democratic opposition within Iran, particularly the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and its leader, Maryam Rajavi. He believes that while Iran has capable fighters for freedom, international support is crucial in not granting concessions or ignoring the regime’s crimes.

In conclusion, Prof. De Lange reaffirmed his commitment to human rights and democracy, particularly for those under oppressive regimes. “Together, we can work towards a better and more humane future,” he concluded, underscoring the global responsibility to support democratic movements.
