UN Envoy to Mediate a Peaceful Solution for Camp Ashraf

Stop Fundamentalism – The United Nation top envoy to Iraq, Martin Kobler, said in a press conference in Baghdad today that he is ready to broker a peaceful closing of Camp Ashraf where 3400 Iranian exiles, members of the main Iranian opposition movement, Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK), live.  This is to prevent another attack by the Iraqi military on the camp, reported AP today.

Kobler was speaking at a joint press conference along with Gorguis Yacoub, a top aide to Nouri al-Maliki.  Yacoub said that Iraq may consider an extension to the deadline if a solution is reached.

House Committee Approves Amendment to Protect Camp Ashraf

Stop Fundamentalism – Members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee on both sides of the isle unanimously approved an amendment to a bill that called to protect the 3400 residents of the Iranian dissident Camp Ashraf which is located northeast of Baghdad today, reported AP. The Bill is designed to impose yet harder sanctions on Iran.

“If history is any guide, it will see another massacre,” said Judge Ted Poe, R-Texas, refereeing to two tragic previous incidents at the camp in which almost 50 residents died when Iraqi military units opened fire on the unarmed population of the camp.

Baghdad says it intends to close the camp by the end of 2011 despite international calls that the date is not realistic as the United Nations High Commission for Refugees is trying to process individual applications of the camp residents to be able to resettle them in third countries.

Stop Fundamentalism – Video taken by Iranian Resistance sources and published on Youtube shows a great number of Iraqi troops move into Camp Ashraf in military vehicles and personnel carriers last night. (see below) The sirens made a lot of noise as the moving military column tends to intimidate any observer.

The Military column moved into the camp last night at 23:00 Baghdad time consisted of at least 30 military vehicles and 10 police cars, says a statement released by National Council of Resistance today.  They entered the Camp through the main entrance, created a lot of noise, and useing high beam lights maneuvered through the camp, says the statement.

Stop Fundamentalism – European Conservative MEP, Struan Stevenson, said to AFP today that 180 Members of the European Parliament from different political groups signed a statement calling for the postponement of the declared December 31 deadline by Baghdad to close Camp Ashraf, home of 3400 Iranian refugees.

Iraq’s Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said in a press conference held in Baghdad today that, “Based on agreements made, members of the MEK will be expelled from Iraq at the end of 2011 and should be transferred to third countries.”  It was unclear whom Iraqi government had made this agreement with.

Filtering SMS Communication in Iran

Stop Fundamentalism – While the Iranian Ministry of Communication is officially filtering internet, SMS message filtering has not been yet confirmed by authorities. But some observations by Iranian service subscribers show that such system is in place and being used. 

A member of the Iranian parliament (Majlis), Ali Akbar Olia told reporters today that “There seems to be a problem with the SMS system.”  He refused to call it censorship.  “For example if you include the word ‘meeting’ in your SMS, it will not be sent.”

Iran wants to be Role Model for Arab Spring Nations

Stop Fundamentalism – Head of Iranian Islamic Culture and Communication Agency, Mohammad Bagher Khoramshad, told reporters today that the Islamic Republic is ready to share its experience and scientific accomplishments with the Muslim people of Egypt.   This is yet another attempt by Iranian officials to show their aspiration to expand their version of Islamic government in nations that are freeing themselves from dictatorships in Arab Spring.

Since the Arab Spring started Iranian regime has not tried to hid its interest to be a role modle for the people of the region to follow.  But recently even the most fanatic Islamic groups in the region are keeping distance and expressing despise from the regime.

Google Gives 100 Million Dollars for YouTube Program Production

SF News – Google is giving away a total of $100 Million to producers to come up with YouTube original programming, reported Associated Press from people familiar with the matter.

The money is an advance on advertising income Google expects the new entertainment venture will bring in. 

YouTube is a popular online Video depository owned by Google which enables users to upload and watch videos.  While many of the users are armature videographers, there are some professional content creators on the medium who actively contribute videos through YouTube content channels. 

Iraq’s Province of Salahuddin Forms an independent State

 

Stop Fundamentalism – The governing council of the province of Salahuddin in Iraq declared the province to be an independent state within the unified Iraq Thursday.    The Federal laws embedded in the constitution of Iraq allow local governments to announce economical and administrative autonomy from the central government when majority of the members of the council vote in favor of the procedure and the vote passes a public referendum in the province.

Meanwhile hundreds of Salahuddin resident took to the streets of Tikrit today following the Friday prayers to express their support for the decision of the provincial council. Similar demonstrations took place in other cities such as Samarra and Salahuddin.

The governing council of Salahuddin has 26 seats and its capital Tikrit is about 175 kilometers west of Baghdad.  Majority of the population in the province are Sunni Muslims.

Syrian Unrest Continues to Claim Lives

Stop Fundamentalism – At least 30 protesters died in Syrian cities across the country today in clashes between government security forces and demonstrators, activists reported to Associated Press.  Most deaths apear to have taken place in the city of Homs.

The United Nations last estimated that the number of those killed in Syria by government forces since the demonstrations began in mid March is over 3000.

Who is General Gholam Shakuri of Iranian Quds Force?

Stop Fundamentalism – An Iranian dissident website, Hambastegimeli.com, revealed information from internal Iranian sources  about the identity of the second perpetrator of the assassination plot in Washington, today.

According to the website, General Gholam Shakuri is an Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps commander assigned to Quds forces.  His complete name is “Behnam Gholam Shakuri” born in the city of Hamedan.  He currently carries a rank of General in IRGC.

Shakuri joined the Revolutionary Guards after the Iranian revolution in 1979, when Ayatollah Khomeini ousted Mohammad Reza Shah’s regime. He fought in the Iran-Iraq war and was one of the elements of torture and crackdown on the Iranian opposition during the 1980s and participated in the 1988 massacre of political prisoners in that country.
