While the day was established by human rights organizations 22 years ago, it resonates with deeper meaning in Iran. The Iranian people’s call for “No to Execution” is intrinsically linked to their defiance against the ruling regime, which relies on mass executions for survival.
On October 8, 2024, inmates in 22 prisons across Iran participated, aligning their protests with the upcoming World Day Against the Death Penalty. The campaign, which has garnered significant attention, condemns the regime’s increasing number of executions, demanding an end to this brutal practice.
Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is at the center of power struggles as competing political groups within the government clash over key appointments and policies. The tensions are intensifying, reflecting the fragility of the clerical dictatorship’s hold on power.
In a government dominated by the absolute authority of an unelected Supreme Leader, the idea of “national unity” becomes hollow. In reality, unity within the regime can only revolve around Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, never the Iranian nation itself.
This comes in response to a surge in executions, including 264 since Massoud Pezeshkian assumed the presidency. On October 10, the same day as the World Day Against the Death Penalty, a series of coordinated attacks targeted regime facilities in multiple cities, underscoring the escalating resistance within Iran.
This intervention has played a key role in prolonging and intensifying the violence, with former high-ranking Iranian official Ezzatollah Zarghami openly admitting his participation in training Palestinian resistance fighters.
The protests reflect the deepening political and economic crises plaguing the nation, which have only been exacerbated by the new administration handpicked by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Despite the inauguration of a new government, the regime’s inability to address systemic issues has become increasingly apparent, driving widespread frustration.
These demonstrations underscored the nation’s escalating economic and social crises, as the government’s failure to address grievances led to increased frustration and desperation. In Tehran, retirees from the Telecommunications Company of Iran gathered to demand pension reforms, protesting the government’s mismanagement of their funds.
This move comes as part of broader EU measures targeting the regime’s economy and its ability to engage in international logistics. According to ILNA, Ali Mahmoudi Saray, Chairman of the Iranian Federation of Transport and Logistics, confirmed that this ban has been in effect for the past month. “From a month ago, the loading of 182 European goods by Iranian trucks has been prohibited,” Saray stated, highlighting the increasing challenges Iranian logistics firms face due to these sanctions.
Rhein specifically requested that Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock shut down Iran’s consulate in Frankfurt, a key diplomatic mission for the Islamic Republic in the country. In a letter to Baerbock, Rhein condemned Iran as one of the primary backers of terrorist activities in the region, particularly about recent missile attacks on Israel by Iranian-supported groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
