Iran: Protests and widespread discontent continue

Following weeks of increasing tension in Kazerun in the Fars province in Iran, people have taken to the streets in protest. Authorities have tried to get the people to disperse, but its attempts have failed. In fact, they have backfired on the regime and the people are resisting its violence. The security forces have arrested many individuals and many protesters have been injured after shots were fired. The security forces also attacked protesters and there have now been reports of a number of deaths.

Truckers’ Strike in Iran Jolts Government into Addressing Grievances

Iranian truckers have gone on strike in seven of Iran’s provinces. The government appears to be alarmed and is trying to persuade the drivers to return to work.

On Wednesday, state-run news agency Tasnim quoted transport official Dariush Amani of Iran’s Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization, as saying it is “reasonable” for truck drivers to demand greater fees for transporting cargo to compensate for their rising costs. He added that the cargo fees paid to the drivers should be increased by 15 to 20 percent.

Iran’s Ambassador admits contacting Taliban

The Iranian ambassador to Kabul recently admitted that Tehran is in contact with the Islamist Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan. According to a May 21st report by the government’s official news agency (IRNA), Mohammad Reza Bahrami stated, “We have already explicitly said we are in touch with the Taliban, but we never established formal relations with the group to avoid legitimizing it.”

Five Iranian officials accused of smuggling ballistic missiles to Yemen, in violation of a UN Security Council Resolution had sanctions levied against them by the US Treasury Department earlier this week, in what appears to be just the first step toward ensuring that Iranian missiles no longer reach Yemen.

A report was recently released by The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) that confirms that chlorine gas was used by the Assad regime in the attack on northern Syrian town of Saraqeb in early February. As we know, this was not the first time the regime used chemical weapons against civilian populations. Apparently, it was also not even the most recent incident.

Iranian Worker Sets Himself on Fire

As reported by state-run Iran Labor News Agency (ILNA), in protest of his living conditions, a service worker for the city of Abadan municipality has set himself on fire. Apparently, in addition to financial distress, the worker, Zamen Azarbaijani, had been grappling with problems related to his work environment, but ILNA did not elaborate on the nature of the problems.

British aid worker faces new falsified charges in Iran

A British charity worker wrongfully imprisoned in Iran is now facing new trumped-up charges of “spreading propaganda” against the state, her husband has said.
Richard Ratcliffe sent a statement to Al Jazeera on Monday explaining that his wife, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, denied this charge, as she had done with the other charges, when she appeared in court on Saturday.
