Iran Regime’s Threats Show Just How Weak It Is

The international community should take the increased threats and malign behaviour coming from the Iranian Regime seriously, but they should also be aware that this aggression is not a sign of strength from the mullahs, instead it’s a sign of weakness.

Over the course of this summer, the Iranian Regime has lost all hope of maintaining the 2015 nuclear accord and the benefits that it reaped from that, so it’s now increasing its attacks on Iranian dissidents in the West.

On August 20, the US Justice Department released a statement about two Iranian men, Ahmadreza Mohammadi-Doostdar and Majid Ghorbani, who were caught spying on Iranian opposition group, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).

When the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal was being negotiated, the Iran lobby claimed that its passage would embolden the so-called moderates within the Iranian Regime and help deliver a stable Iran that could be brought back into the global fold.

However, since the deal was signed, it appears that the opposite was true. The deal actually caused the Regime to move further away from a moderate government and towards a right-wing dictatorship, that attacks its dissenters at home and abroad.

The biggest dissenter group is the Mujahideen-e Khalq (MEK), the oldest and largest Iranian dissident groups working to promote democracy and freedom within Iran. Over the years, this group has worked tirelessly to expose the malign activities of the Iranian Regime that are hidden from the world’s view, like its then-clandestine nuclear programme in 2003.

As U.S. Sanctions Near, China’s Ship-Owners Quit Hauling Iranian Crude

According to ship-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg, the state-run National Iranian Tanker Company owns the 17 ships used to carry oil from the Islamic Republic to China in July and August. The data shows the contrast between this and the prior three months, when almost half the vessels that made the journey in were owned by companies in China. It appears that China’s shipowners are shunning Iran’s oil before U.S. sanctions targeting Iran’s crude exports snap back into effect in early November, even though it is reported that China has rejected a U.S. request to halt purchases from Iran.

US secretary of state Mike Pompeo recently appointed Brian Hook, a former aide to national security adviser John Bolton, as the new State Department’s special representative for Iran and tasked him with creating Iran Action Group.

This group will monitor Iran’s compliance, or lack thereof, with Pompeo’s 12-point plan that was designed to change the behaviour of the Iranian regime.

Recently, Pompeo said: “The regime in Tehran has been responsible for a torrent of violent and destabilizing behaviour against the United States, our allies, our partners and indeed the Iranian people themselves.”

On Monday, The United States Department of Justice announced that two Intelligence Ministry agents of the Iranian regime, Ahmadreza Mohammadi Doostdar and Majid Ghorbani, were arrested in the US on August 9th, 2018.

Doostdar and Ghorbani are alleged to have been spying on, and plotting against, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI or MEK) and National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).

The indictment said that this spy operation against the PMOI has been occurring since March 2017 at least, and “the Government of Iran considers the MEK to be a primary opponent of the current regime, and has sought to eradicate the MEK.”

U.S. Policy on Iran Set to Evolve With New Task Force

U.S. President Donald’s approach to the Iran issue is very different to that of his predecessor. He in no way advocates the appeasing approach to Iran because he understands that the clerical regime is sneaky and cannot be trusted. Moving forward with his new strategy on Iran is proving to be challenging for Trump, not least because he has been faced with officials that believe Obama’s approach should be favoured.

However, his Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has just announced that a new task force has been set up in the State Department and has been tasked with “directing, reviewing, and coordinating all aspects of the State Department’s Iran-related activity”. This means that all recommendations and reports will go through the task force before getting to Trump for the final decision on matters.

On 16th August, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the Trump administration has created the Iran Action Group. He explained that it will report directly to himself and that it will be “responsible for directing, reviewing, and coordinating all aspects of the State Department’s Iran-related activity”.

Pompeo spoke about Iran’s violence and destabilisation of the Middle East that has continued for almost four decades. He also specifically mentioned that the people of Iran are on the receiving end of the regime’s belligerence too. He said that President Trump has “instituted a campaign of pressure, deterrence, and solidarity with the long-suffering Iranian people”.

Iran’s Involvement in Iraq and Lebanon Is Destroying Those Countries

Back in 2008, regional decision-makers believed that they had found a solution to the crisis in Lebanon; namely giving the Hezbollah militia a role in the Lebanese government. However, this has only led to the Iranian Regime having vast control over the country, through their Hezbollah proxy.

Hassan Nasrallah consistently thwarts Saad Hariri’s attempts to form a government and insists on normalized relations with Syrian dictator Bashar Assad, with whom Hezbollah and the Iranian Regime collaborated to assassinate Saad’s father, Rafiq Hariri and who threatened to break Lebanon if Rafiq didn’t submit to Syria’s demands.

US President Trump expressed his willingness to negotiate with Iran following the first round of US sanctions coming into effect. He hopes to set new conditions for the agreement that fill the gaps that caused him to withdraw from it.

The important concerns that it does not address are related to Iran’s ballistic missile program, and its hostile behavior in the region. As well, the development of nuclear reactors in a way that prevents Iran from possessing nuclear weapons must be addressed.
