United States Needs to Act Faced With Rising Protests in Iran

The new year has started with news of major anti-government protests and demonstrations being carried out across the Islamic Republic of Iran. The people are coming together to remind the government that the people are strong in numbers and are calling on the government to forget about its ambitions abroad and concentrate on its own people.

1988 Massacre in Iran Remains Unpunished and Abuse Ongoing

In 1988, one of the most horrific crimes against humanity took place. More than 30,000 people were executed during the course of one single summer following the orders of the Supreme Leader of Iran at that time. Most of the victims were members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, the PMOI, the main opposition to the brutal ruling regime. No-one was spared – not even pregnant women and minors.

What Should the US Do About Iran Protests?

In the past week, Iran has seen escalating protests against the Regime.

What began on December 28, as yet another protest about the failing economy, quickly turned into a full-scale denouncement of the Iranian Regime and calls for the mullahs to resign. Their chants against rises in the cost of living quickly changed into bold complaints about government corruption and repression.

Iran’s Counter-Revolution

All revolutions- including the 1979 Iranian Revolution- are eventually removed by a counter-revolution, according to journalist Ghassan Charbel.

He wrote: “The Iranian revolution acts as if it is not similar to other revolts. It is delusional in believing that it does not adhere to the laws of revolutions. It wrongfully believes that it can erase the signs of its old age and the disappointment of those whom it promised paradise.”

IRAN: Anti-Government Protests Continue for Second Day

Iranians took to the streets in several cities across their country for a second day on Friday to protest rising prices and corruption as well as the regime’s support for Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad.

The largest protest on Friday was held in the western city of Kermanshah. Similar protests were held in a number of cities including the southern city of Shiraz, the northern city of Rasht.
