Iran: prisoners and political prisoners, continue suffering from spread of coronavirus.

After prisoners rioted late March 2020 protesting the authorities’ failure to address concerns related to the spread of COVID-19 in the prison.

Dozens of prisoners were blindfolded and transferred to an unknown location following the protests. The authorities refused to reveal the fate and whereabouts of the prisoners to their families for two weeks.

The majority were returned to section 5 of Sheiban prison by April 13 after being interrogated and tortured in a ministry of intelligence detention center in Ahvaz.

Once again, I urge the UN Secretary-General, Security Council, and High Commissioner for Human Rights to compel the clerical regime to release Iranian political prisoners in Iran.

Narges Mohammadi marked the beginning of the sixth year of her imprisonment by sending an open letter from the Central Prison of Zanjan.

In her letter in April 2020 from Zanjan Prison, Narges Mohammadi writes about female inmates who are victims of patriarchal laws.

“I begin another year of my oppressive prison sentence. Sharing the suffering of the victims of poverty, corruption, despotism, and the rule of patriarchal laws, I am spending my time in prison among my sisters. I stepped into this path to defend the rights of these women. I am serving my sentence beside people whose poverty and hunger compelled me to protest.

Iranian Regime: situation in Khuzestan fragile and volatile.

The number of people infected with the coronavirus in Iran’s south-western province of Khuzestan has worried people.

Mohammad Alavi, head of the province’s health center and deputy director of health at Ahvaz Jundi Shahpour University of Medical Sciences, said: “Statistics that are regularly announced are increasing. There are statistics that are almost high in Khuzestan province. This information and the available statistics indicate two issues. The first problem is that the cases of the disease in Khuzestan province have really exceeded our expectations.

Iran detains man for contradicting regime narrative on coronavirus

A man has been detained in a northern Iran province for “publishing lies” on social media about the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, according to a Cyber Police official there.

During a press conference covered by state-run media outlets on Monday, Colonel Iraj Pourmostamand, the Head of the Cyber Police in Gilan, told journalists that the 60-year-old man “confessed to his crime”.

Teachers form one of many protest rallies in Iran in the week of International Workers’ Day.

Teachers from a number of provinces throughout Iran made their way to Tehran to hold a protest rally outside the country’s parliament, the Majlis. The protest was linked to the mullahs’ policies of expelling many teachers from the profession for no good reason. One of the key grievances is that teachers are now subjected to tests to prove their ability in the profession. They are demanding that the testing should not take place and that teachers should be allowed to attend teachers’ universities instead.

Heavy rain has been affecting south-west Iran since 24 February, triggering widespread floods across Lorestan and Khuzestan provinces. According to UN OCHA, more than 320 people were displaced, while approximately 24,000 people from Nurabad, Memulan, and Poldakhtar cities (Lorestan Province) are affected. About 617 km of roads and 332 bridges have been damaged in Lorestan, leaving more than 58 villages isolated. There are concern regarding the risk of waterborne diseases, disruption to schooling, and livelihoods, especially with the ongoing Coronavirus and desert locust outbreaks.

The dire Human Rights Situation in Iran Prisons

The situation in Mullah’s prisons has grown worse ever since the Coronavirus crisis first hit, with many prisoners, particularly, political prisoners, contracting the virus because of the regime’s refusal to release political prisoners, quarantine the sick, or provide medical treatment.

The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran) – the main opposition to the Iranian regime – has reported that more than 37,600 people have died in Iran after contracting COVID-19. This is deeply concerning considering that the daily death toll is rising at an alarming rate so long after the start of the outbreak.
