Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Norway said in a joint statement on Thursday that the coordinated attack on four of their oil tankers just off the UAE coast in May was likely carried out by a state actor, according to the results of their preliminary investigation.

The three nations said that limpet mines – a type of naval mine that attach to their target with magnets – made large holes in the hulls of the four tankers on May 12, but did not result in extensive damage or oil spills.

Much has been made of growing tensions between the US and Iran, with some speculating that the two nations are on the brink of war, but this is unlikely.

Prof. Hillel Frisch, a senior research associate at the Centre for Strategic Studies, claims that this is because Iran is “too smart” to go to war with the US, but this gives a lot of undue credit to those leading the Iranian Dictatorship. After all, how smart do you have to be to avoid fighting a tank with a pocketknife? And how smart is it to continually goad the person driving the tank, when you know that all you have is a pocketknife?

At the beginning of May, the Trump administration deployed an aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East. It also ordered the deployment of more troops as well as Patriot missiles and bombers. The administration said that it took this action after a credible threat from Iran, following intelligence that indicated that the regime may be preparing to launch attack on American interests or forces in the region.

The Iranian regime is at a dead-end. It has no possibility of staying in power as the current situation stands. It is under immense pressure domestically because the people of Iran will not relent in their calls for regime change.

The situation in Iran, for the people, has been becoming increasingly unbearable because the regime’s response to the widespread discontent is to crack down on the people even more. Human rights are disrespected and people risk arrest, imprisonment, torture and even execution for speaking out against the regime. However, cracking down on the people even more is not going to make the people lose any desire for regime collapse – it just strengthens their position.
