National Security Advisor John Bolton threatened the Iranian regime during a trip to the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday, just two days after President Donald Trump said the United States “wasn’t looking to hurt Iran at all.”

Speaking to reporters in Abu Dhabi, Bolton blamed Iran for an unsuccessful attack on the Saudi oil port of Yanbu and for planting bombs on four oil tankers off the UAE coast—without providing evidence to support his claims. The attack on Saudi Arabia was previously unknown.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit is scheduled to take place in Makkah on May 31, and both Gulf and Arab summits are expected to be held on the sidelines of the Islamic summit. But analysts believe Iran’s readiness to hold talks with its Arab neighbors doesn’t reflect a change in its foreign policy and is a manoeuvre to divide Arab and Muslim countries ahead of the upcoming Islamic summit in Makkah, analysts said.

At the beginning of the month, it looked like Iran and the United States were heading towards a major military conflict. B-52 bombers were also deployed in response to what the United States described as a threat by Iran to U.S. forces in the Middle East.

The Iranian regime finds itself in the direst straits it has faced, economically. Trump’s May 2nd decision to end waivers on Iranian oil sales put a damper on the regime’s plan to wait out the crisis.

The regime has managed to withstand the resumption of sanctions that targeted its currency and financial system, but this latest blow to oil exports will cripple the economy.

Today, Amnesty International published an analysis of changes that are being proposed to the laws that affect ordinary Iranians charged with the most serious crimes. The amended laws, if passed, will permit the prosecution to deprive detainees who are arrested on “national security” charges, as well as certain other serious criminal charges, access to a lawyer for 20 days, and could be extended to cover the whole investigation phase. Sentences that carry the death penalty or amputation punishments are included under the proposed amended laws.

Pictures showing Iranian paramilitary forces loading missiles onto boats are behind a recent sharp escalation in tensions between the US and Iran, The New York Times reported Thursday.

The May 3 overhead images show fully assembled missiles being loaded onto boats in the Persian Gulf, three officials told the Times, raising concerns that they could be used by Iranian Revolutionary Guards to target US Navy vessels.
