US expands economic sanctions on Iran

The US has expanded its economic campaign against Iran by imposing sanctions on airlines that are transporting troops, weapons and money to Syria to keep dictator Bashar Assad in power and Lebanon to keep the region embroiled in war.
On May 24, the Trump administration sanctioned the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) private airline, Mahan Air, which is said to be one of the main air links for Iran’s proxy forces. It is already blacklisted by the US and most of Europe.

The Lebanese Prime Minister has criticized a high-ranking Iranian general for comments that he recently made praising Iran-backed groups in Lebanon for gains that they made in the country’s parliamentary elections in May.
Saad Hariri told journalists on Monday that the comments made by Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s Quds Force, were “regrettable”. He added that Iranian interference in Lebanon’s internal affairs was not in the interests of Iran, Lebanon, or the Middle East.

Almost a month ago to the day, US President Donald announced his decision to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), or the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. He said that the Iranian regime is “the leading state sponsor of terror” and highlighted that it is exporting missiles that could cause great damage across the region. Trump also pointed to the conflicts across the Middle East that Iran is fuelling and reminded everyone that the regime is supporting terrorist proxies such as Al Qaeda, the Taliban, Hezbollah and Hamas.
