U.S. President Donald Trump has offered the Iranian President an opportunity to meet. Iran, however, has given signals that it is prepared to do anything but meet. Trump, and many others, say that the Iranian regime will soon be under so much pressure that it is left with no choice. Trump is insistent that a stronger nuclear deal than the current one is possible.

Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Mohammad Ali Jafari, said: “The Iranian people will never allow their officials to meet and negotiate with the Great Satan, we are not North Korea.” Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei went further and said that he is banning talks with the United States.

The Iranian Regime’s anger towards Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi has made Abadi somewhat of a patriot and has linked his political future to the extent of Iranian influence in Iraq.

In Iraq, there is a rather negative view of Abadi because he belongs to the Islamic Dawa Party, which is seen as a Shiite version of the Muslim Brotherhood. However, since he bravely announced that Iraq is committed to implementing the US sanctions against Iran, he is being seen as the hero who protected Iraq, rather than kowtowing to the mullahs.

While Ahmadinejad Challenges the Iranian Establishment, the People Call for Regime Overthrow

Iran’s economic crisis will only intensify once full US sanctions are re-imposed in early November. In response, Iran’s leadership, such as Ahmad Jannati, chairman of both the Assembly of Experts and the Council of Guardians, are calling for speedy trials and tough sentences for economic criminals. As well, Supreme Leader Khamenei has approved the creation of “special courts” to fight corruption and financial crimes. Iranian leaders and officials are calling for the execution of economic criminals on the grounds of “spreading corruption on earth”.

While measures like this may deter the worst offenders, they are not going to resolve the deep-rooted and apparently irreversible corruption in the Iranian economy.

A statement regarding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, more commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal, was issued by the European Union, last week.

“The JCPOA is working and delivering on its goal, namely to ensure that the Iranian programme remains exclusively peaceful as confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 11 consecutive reports,” according to the statement. “It is a key element of the global nuclear non-proliferation architecture, crucial for the security of Europe, the region, and the entire world. We expect Iran to continue to fully implement all of its nuclear commitments under the JCPOA.”

Quercus, the British renewable energy investor, has stated that it will halt the construction of a 500 million euro (445.9 million pounds) solar power plant in Iran because of the recently imposed U.S. sanctions.

Planned as the world’s sixth largest solar plant, it would also have been the first renewable energy investment outside Europe by Quercus.

Partly because of the air pollution problems in Iran, the country has been trying to increase the share of renewable-produced electricity in its energy mix. It was also hoping to have about 5 gigawatts in renewables installed by 2020 to meet international commitments.

The United States has now imposed sanctions on an Iran-based militant leader, who was trying to overthrow the US-backed government of Bahrain.

The US State Department said in a statement that Qassim Abdullah Ali Ahmed (also known as Qassim al-Muamen), the leader of the Bahraini al-Ashtar Brigades militant group, recruited terrorists in Bahrain and provided funding, weapons and explosives to the members of the al-Ashtar Brigades, so that they could carry out attacks against the Bahraini government. The State Department also said that al-Muamen had facilitated the training of weapons and explosives for al-Ashtar Brigades members.

After security forces arrested her on August 1st, no information has been available regarding the whereabouts of civil rights activist Negisa Shahbazi.

She was arrested after the Iranian regime’s security forces raided her residence, and according to her family, no information has yet been made available.

Negisa Shahbazi is an electrical engineer by profession, and she is also an active supporter of civil rights in Iran. She is also a member of the Cower mountain climbing team in Ilam, who played a major role in extinguishing the recent fires on Kabir Kuh — one of the long ranges of the Zagros Mountains near the border of Lurestan and Ilam Provinces in Ilam province, Iran. She was sharp in her criticism of the Iranian government for their inaction in dealing with the fires.

A controversial announcement last April that the Iranian regime planned to offer 100 of the country’s journalists unrestricted internet access, sparked criticism over the mandate that The Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance (MCIG) would vet all candidates for loyalty to the regime’s Islamist ideology.

The move was described as “favoritism and hush money” by several Iranian journalists on Twitter. Others tweeted that access to cyberspace “is a right, not a favor.” Many journalists claimed that they would not apply, using the hashtag “I’m not interested.”

Arab NATO Could Spell an End to Iranian Regime

Recently, news reports have begun circulating about the proposed establishment of a NATO-style security and military strategic alliance to confront Iranian expansion in the Middle East.

The alliance, said to be between the US, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt and Jordan, will likely be announced by mid-October and will form part of the growing international pressure on Iran.

One of the most important parts of the alliance will be preventing Iran from escalating military, as well as forming an air defence shield to protect the countries involved against a ballistic missile attack from Iran. Both of these goals mean extra pressure on Iran, with less likelihood for a regional conflict that could potentially kill hundreds of thousands. It would also help to stop the Iranian Regime’s Revolutionary Guards from closing the Strait of Hormuz, as they have previously threatened to do, in response to US sanctions on Iranian oil.

During the nationwide protests that swept across Iran last week twenty-five-year-old Reza Outadi was killed. Now, an overseas-based Iranian news site says Iranian authorities have pressured his relatives to identify the slain man as a pro-government militiaman.

State-run news agency Fars reported that Outadi was shot by an unidentified gunman in a passing car. But, on Tuesday, the IranWire news site, run by exiled Iranian journalists, quoted an unnamed male friend of Outadi as saying Karaj’s governor and pro-government Basiji militiamen attended Outadi’s funeral Monday, and after promising to find his killer, asked family members to identify Outadi as a Basiji martyr.
